Fridge/freezer combo specialists
Double door fridge repairs in Gauteng
Two doors, two compartments, and twice the ways things can go wrong. From a freezer that works while the fridge sits warm, to ice sheets behind the drawers, we sort double door faults at your home, usually the same day. We repair every major brand, including Defy, Samsung, Hisense, KIC and Bosch, with same-day call-outs across Sandton, Bryanston, Benoni and the wider Gauteng metro.
Which one is yours?
Double door faults we fix every week
Freezer cold, fridge warm
The classic combo complaint. Usually a defrost fault, blocked airflow vent or a failed evaporator fan, not the compressor most people fear.
Ice sheet on the freezer floor
A blocked defrost drain refreezes meltwater into a slab under the drawers, and eventually drips it onto your kitchen tiles.
Food freezing in the fridge
A faulty damper or thermistor lets freezer air flood the fridge compartment, turning lettuce into ice blocks.
Loud fan noise that stops when you open the door
A tell-tale sign of ice catching the evaporator fan blades, a defrost system problem in disguise.
Dead after load-shedding
Surge-popped relays and control boards top our Gauteng callout list. We carry replacements for the common Defy, Samsung and Hisense combos.
Sweating doors and mouldy seals
Condensation between the two doors means warm air is getting in, and your electricity bill is going out.
Puddles on the floor? Our fridge leaking water guide explains where the water actually comes from.
Know your fridge
The double door combo, explained simply
A double door fridge, what the trade calls a fridge/freezer combination, gives you a proper freezer and a proper fridge in one upright cabinet, each behind its own door. It's the default choice for South African families: enough freezer space for the month's meat, enough fridge space for the week's shop, and a footprint that still fits a normal kitchen. Defy and Hisense dominate the local market, with Samsung, LG, Bosch and Whirlpool strong in the mid to premium range.
The catch? Most modern combos are frost-free, which means a defrost heater, timer or sensor, an evaporator fan and air dampers all working together behind the panels. Brilliant when it works; confusing when it doesn't. That's why a proper diagnosis matters more on a double door than on any simpler fridge, guessing gets expensive.
Electricity & what repairs cost
Running costs, load-shedding and the repair bill
A healthy combo is surprisingly frugal, newer A-rated models sip electricity. But the frost-free system is also where the waste hides. A failed defrost cycle insulates the cooling coil with ice, so the compressor runs longer and longer for less and less cooling. Many owners only notice when the prepaid meter starts emptying faster. Two door seals also mean two chances for a leak: if either door sweats or doesn't pull itself shut, you're paying to cool the kitchen.
Load-shedding deserves its own mention. A full freezer compartment buys you several hours of safety with the doors closed, but the surge when power returns is brutal on electronic control boards, the single most common double door failure we see in Johannesburg and Pretoria.
On price: we don't publish a rate card because no two faults are identical, but the pattern is consistent. Sensors, fans, seals, heaters and relays are small-part repairs that cost a fraction of replacing the fridge. Control boards sit mid-range. A compressor or gas system repair is the serious end, and before you spend there, we'll give you a straight answer on whether the unit justifies it. The call-out fee is quoted upfront when you book, and it's deducted from the repair if you go ahead.
Look after it
Five habits that keep a combo healthy
- Vacuum the condenser coils at the back or base twice a year, dust makes the compressor work hot.
- Never pack food against the air vents between the freezer and fridge; the combo breathes through them.
- Wipe both door seals monthly with warm soapy water and check they grip a slip of paper.
- Keep the unit on a surge-protected plug, cheaper than a new control board after load-shedding.
- If you hear scraping, chirping or the fridge section creeping warmer, call early. Defrost faults are cheap caught soon and costly left late.
